From the mountains of Mexico, I have protected it pretty well through the last few winters, usually allowing the bulbs to go dry dormant and then storing them in dry sawdust in the pumphouse through the worst the winter has to offer. It comes pretty easy from seed and will often bloom the first year once you get the bulbs established so if you are in a cold zone save your seeds.
